Rental fleet payback: knowing when an asset has paid for itself
A simple way to track what each bike, e-bike or board has earned against what it cost, and use it to decide what to buy next.
Every asset in a rental fleet is a small investment. Some pay for themselves in a season; others sit in the back and quietly lose money. Payback per asset turns a hunch about which ones earn into a number you can act on.
What to count
What the asset cost to buy
Everything it has earned in rentals and add-ons
What it has cost in parts and servicing
How many days it was out versus available
Read it per asset, not just per fleet
Fleet totals hide the detail. Two identical e-bikes can earn very different amounts depending on size, battery health or where they sit on the rack. Looking asset by asset shows which ones to service, which to sell and which models to buy more of.
Use it when you buy
When an asset has paid itself back, everything after is margin. Projecting when the rest of the fleet will get there tells you whether this season can fund the next purchase, or whether it should wait.
